An Indian athlete named Krishna Poonia takes part in the women's discus throw competition. A discus thrower who has won gold internationally is Krishna Poonia. She became the first woman to win gold in any women's track and field event at a Common Wealth games in 2010 at the Delhi Commonwealth Games by winning the gold medal with a throw of 61.5 metres.
The Olympic medallist, who now lives in Jaipur, was born on May 5, 1977, in Agroha, Haryana. Poonia and her husband, the former athlete Virender Singh Poonia, both work for the Indian Railways. While pursuing her sociology degree at the Kanodia Girls College in Jaipur, she began her sports career in 2006 in the Asian Games in Doha under the guidance of her husband.
What achievements does she have? Poonia began her athletic career by winning a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Doha in 2006. She created history by being the first woman from her nation to win a medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Despite having a disappointing showing at the 2012 London Games, she was the sixth Indian to ever get to the final round of an Olympic track and field competition. She also holds the national record for the longest discus throw with a toss of 64.76 metres.
Honours & Awards: Krishna received the Arjuna Award in 2010 for achievement in a national sport after winning gold at the Common Wealth Games. She received the Padma Shri in 2011.
