After leading India to victory in the 2011 World Cup, MS Dhoni’s cricket career has had its fair share of ups and downs

By guiding India to the 2011 World Cup victory, Mahendra Singh Dhoni permanently inscribed his name in the annals of history. After Kapil Dev, he was the second captain to lead India to the prized title. He rose to the status of a demigod in the nation as a result of the enormous victory and his legendary match-winning six against Sri Lanka in the championship game. Dhoni, though, saw his share of ups and downs after the World Cup.

Dhoni found the year after the World Cup to be a little challenging, particularly in red-ball cricket as India lost to England and Australia 0-4 at home. In both red-ball cricket trips, the Asian giants were atrocious, losing to the hosts.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-61650″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-after-leading-india-to-victory-in-the-2011-world-cup-ms-dhonis-cricket-career-has-had-its-fair-share-of-ups-and-downs-6c8f7-16692740223562-1920-11zon.png” alt=”” width=”1577″ height=”1047″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-after-leading-india-to-victory-in-the-2011-world-cup-ms-dhonis-cricket-career-has-had-its-fair-share-of-ups-and-downs-6c8f7-16692740223562-1920-11zon.png 696w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-after-leading-india-to-victory-in-the-2011-world-cup-ms-dhonis-cricket-career-has-had-its-fair-share-of-ups-and-downs-6c8f7-16692740223562-1920-11zon-150×100.png 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1577px) 100vw, 1577px” />

India was eliminated from the Super 8 round and failed to advance to the semifinals of the 2012 T20 World Cup. In the meanwhile, they were able to recover as Dhoni led the Indian side to a historic Champions Trophy triumph on English soil in 2013, helping them win another ICC championship.

India continued to play both white-ball and red-ball cricket successfully at home, but winning matches away from home remained difficult for them.

The 2015 showpiece event’s semifinal saw Australia defeat the Men in Blue, who were unable to successfully defend their ODI World Cup crown. India suffered a painful loss that even brought tears to Dhoni’s eyes.

The Indian team’s ICC championship drought continued to grow as the wicketkeeper batter guided them to the 2014 T20 World Cup final and the 2016 World Cup semifinal.

The seasoned wicketkeeper, however, resigned as captain of the T20I and ODI teams in 2017 and announced his retirement from Test cricket on December 30, 2014. He continued to play while serving as Virat Kohli’s captain, and from behind the stumps, he was a huge aid to him in white-ball cricket.

At the 2019 World Cup, the 42-year-old perhaps experienced the lowest moment of his career when he was run out against New Zealand in the quarterfinal. Despite scoring 50 runs, Dhoni was unable to lead his side to victory. Martin Guptill ran him off the field, and he sobbed as he departed.

His last international cricket encounter ended up being that one.

Errors in the IPL

After winning the World Cup in 2011, Dhoni led the Chennai Super Kings to three IPL championships, the most recent of which was in 2023. As a result of their participation in match-fixing, CSK were subject to a two-year suspension, and Dhoni was forced to play for the Rising Pune Super Giants, where things didn’t go according to plan for him. Pune lost the championship game against Mumbai Indians in 2017 after he was relieved of his captaincy after failing to lead Pune to the playoffs in the inaugural season.

Dhoni, who is perhaps the league’s most popular player, continues to maintain a sizable fan base in the IPL, and it is anticipated that he would participate again in the next season. He said that he will do his best and improve his fitness to be ready for the next season after leading CSK to victory in the 2023 championship match.
